Pinetop, AZ (10/3/2025) – The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) begins a new fuels reduction project in Apache County in a continuous effort to protect Arizona’s residents and critical infrastructure and improve the health of the state’s forests.

Starting this week, work begins on a 13-acre private land fuels reduction project within the community of Greer. The project is surrounded by private property, US Forest Service lands, and the Little Colorado River. The project involves hand thinning treatment to reduce fuel loading within the Wildland Urban Interface of private property adjacent to the project. Debris from the project work will be removed or piled and then burned off at a later time when weather conditions are conducive for prescribed burning.

The primary goal is fuels reduction for community protection and to reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire to the community of Greer. This project is located near this year's Greer Fire and will dovetail into other completed fuels treatment projects in that area to further safeguard the community.  Additional benefits include improving habitat for wildlife as well as watershed and forest health.

The project is expected to take a few months and should be completed by the end of the year barring any delays with resources or inclement weather. Residents in the area may see increased traffic near the area and should be mindful of equipment traveling along the roadway.
