A New York man has been charged with eluding police, burglary, and theft following an investigation by the Cranford Police Detective Bureau related to an incident that occurred in Cranford during the early morning hours of May 5, 2025.

At approximately 4:15 AM on May 5, Cranford officers were dispatched to a residence on North Lehigh Avenue after receiving a report of an individual attempting to burglarize motor vehicles. Officers quickly located a suspect who matched the caller’s description. However, the individual ignored the officers’ verbal commands to stop and fled on foot, ultimately entering the driver's seat of a nearby vehicle. The suspect then fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed while officers pursued him. The pursuit was eventually terminated near the Garden State Parkway 136 interchange, as officers lost sight of the vehicle.

A follow-up investigation revealed that several vehicles in the North Lehigh Avenue area had been unlawfully entered, and belongings had been stolen shortly before the suspect fled from the police.

The Cranford Police Detective Bureau conducted an extensive investigation, which led to charges being filed against Loquinne Mathis, 21, of Rockaway Beach, New York. Mathis was located and taken into custody in New York.

He has been charged with second-degree eluding, third-degree burglary, and third-degree theft. Mathis is currently being held in New York on various other criminal charges as well.
