A Union County man was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm during a motor vehicle stop on Walnut Avenue and Behnert Place Thursday, December 28th 2023.
At approximately 7:58 PM, Officer Travis Freeman stopped a black 2019 Toyota for an equipment violation in the area of Walnut Avenue at Behnert Place. Subsequently, Officer Ryan Drew was dispatched as Officer Freeman’s back-up. During the course of the motor vehicle investigation, Officer Freeman located a loaded firearm. The suspect, later identified as driver Montrell Ayers, 37, of Elizabeth New Jersey, was taken into custody without incident.
Ayers was found to be in possession of a loaded .38 Hermann Weihrauch revolver containing hollow nose ammunition.
Ayers was charged with 2nd Degree Possession of a Firearm and 4th Degree Possession of Hollow Nose Ammunition. At the time of this arrest, Ayers was committed to the Union County Jail pending a detention hearing. In addition, Ayers was issued motor vehicle summonses for improper display of license plates and driving with a suspended driver’s license.
