On October 8, 2019, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by officials from Byron and Gaines Townships and notified of a possible embezzlement by a public official. The Cutlerville Fire Department is owned and operated by Byron and Gaines Townships pursuant to an Inter-Governmental Agreement. An investigation was launched when townsihp officials conducted an audit that showed several pieces of property purchased during a renovation project that began in 2016 were missing from the Cutlerville Fire Department.

Szakacs supervised the renovation project and was involved in the purchasing of material and equipment related to the project. Investigators conducted a search warrant and located several of the missing items at Szakacs’ residence.
