GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (August 28, 2021) – The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal car crash involving one vehicle in Gaines Township.

On 08/28/2021 at 1:44 AM, deputies from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to S. Division Avenue and 84th Street S.E. on a crash involving one vehicle. A Ford Fusion with seven occupants was traveling westbound on 84th Street S.E. when it lost control and struck two utility poles. Multiple occupants were ejected from the vehicle as a result of the crash.

One of the passengers, Toyionna Gibbs (17) from Grand Rapids, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver, a 20-year-old female from Grand Rapids, was transported to Spectrum Butterworth in critical condition. Four other passengers were transported to local hospitals in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Dutton Fire Department, Cutlerville Fire Department, Byron Township Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance assisted at the scene. The intersection was closed for several hours during the investigation. The crash remains under investigation; however, speed is believed to be a factor.
