Incident Type: Weapon Found at School

BYRON TWP, Mich:  This morning at approximately 9:50 a.m. Byron Center High School went into an internal lockdown after receiving a report of a student with a weapon in their backpack.  High school staff and the Kent County Sheriff's Office school resource officer responded immediately and found a handgun in the student's backpack.  The situation is contained and the lockdown has been lifted, with the student and the handgun in custody.  While the reason for the student posessing the weapon remains under investigation, at this point we are unaware of a threat against the BCHS student body.

It is important we acknowledge the brave actions of the students who brought this information to the attention of school officials and their school resource officer. The outcome of this situation serves as an important reminder that keeping our schools safe and secure is everybody's responsibility.
