KCSO Shares Important Reminders for National School Bus Safety Week

October 20th, 2021 12:05 pm

During National School Bus Safety Week, the Kent County Sheriff's Office educates motorists on the importance of safely sharing the road with school buses. Here are a few great reminders.

Prepare to stop when a slowing school bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing. On a two-lane road, vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop. On a multi-laned paved-across road, vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop. On a divided highway, vehicles behind the bus MUST stop; vehicles traveling in the opposite direction should proceed with caution.

A good reminder is to think of a stopped school bus like a traffic signal. If the overhead lights are flashing yellow, prepare to stop. If the overhead lights are flashing red, stop. If the big red stop-arm is out, stop. Remember, stop-arm cameras are approved and in use on school buses statewide. And, when the hazard lights are flashing, proceed with caution.

School bus safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please help us to keep our community’s kids safe.
