April 28th, 2022 4:55 pm

UPDATE | April 29th, 2022 at 2:00pm

On April 28, 2022, at 1:59 PM, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to check the wellbeing of a resident at 563 Sunbrook Drive, SE in Gaines Township. Due to the information provided, deputies entered the home and located a 49-year-old male, later identified as Aung Myint Tun, deceased from a gunshot wound.

Detectives were called to the scene to investigate the suspicious death and were outside the residence waiting for a search warrant when the victim’s 18-year-old son, Htet Walar Tun, drove up to the front of the residence. Detectives made contact with Htet and he refused verbal commands to unlock the door and exit the vehicle. Detectives opened the driver’s door and immediately saw a rifle next to Htet. After Htet grabbed the rifle, several detectives entered the vehicle to try and secure the weapon. Detective Nathan Stanton grabbed the barrel of the gun to prevent it from being pointed at anyone, when Htet fired a round causing a muzzle blast injury to Detective Stanton’s hand. No one was struck by the bullet. The detective was transported by law enforcement to University of Michigan Health-West. He was treated, released, and is recovering at home with the expectation of full recovery. Detective Stanton has been with KCSO 4 years.

Htet was taken into custody without further incident and was lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility on the charges of Open Murder, three counts of Felonious Assault, Assault on a Police Officer, all pending review by the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office.

An autopsy was performed this morning and the manner of death is a homicide.
