UPDATE | KCSO Investigates Serious Crash Involving a Deputy

January 28th, 2022 8:00 am

40-year-old Brandon John Vandersloot of Walker died at the hospital as a result of the crash yesterday evening. KCSO’s deputy was treated and released from the hospital. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Vandersloot’s family”, said Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young. “We are proud of our deputy’s resolve. Even after being involved in a head on crash, she was able to get out of her vehicle and started to render aid to the other driver.” Initial information remains that Vandersloot’s 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt lost control while trying to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him. The Cobalt crossed over into oncoming traffic and struck the police Chevrolet Tahoe. KCSO’s Traffic & Safety Unit continues to investgate the crash as they look over data collected from the vehicles and scene.

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich:  Just after 6:00pm this evening a patrol deputy was traveling northbound on Fruit Ridge Ave near Stage St non-emergency, responding to a vehicle crash.  A tow truck traveling southbound on Fruit Ridge was slowing to make a turn.  A dark blue sedan, behind the tow truck, lost control on the slippery roads and crossed over into the path of the deputy.

The driver of the sedan is a 40-year-old Walker resident and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.  The tow truck was not involved in the collision.  The deputy is a 2.5 year employee with the KCSO and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.  The crash remains under investigation at this time and we will update you when we have more information.
