UPDATE | KCSO Investigates Shooting Incident in Byron Township

March 31st, 2022 3:47 am

UPDATE:  The identity of the deceased suspect is Christopher Carl-James Worth, a 39-year-old from Middleville, MI.  Investigators believe that he was involved in a vehicle crash in Allegan County at some point.  From nearby this crash a vehicle was stolen and later recovered near the scene of the shooting in Kent County.  KCSO detectives are working with Allegan County to determine if the first vehicle involved in the crash was stolen or not.  The homeowner along 108th St called 911 and armed himself with a shotgun after hearing commotion coming from outside.  The suspect was armed with a handgun and there is evidence to believe that the suspect was attempting to gain access into the home.  During this, there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and homeowner.

Again, a special thanks to our law enforcement partners who assisted in the initial response: Allegan County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, and the Gun Lake Tribal Police Department.

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich:  Just after midnight on 3/31/22 a suspect armed with a firearm attempted to break into a home along 108th St SW near Wilson Ave in southern Kent County.  The suspect was shot by the home owner as he was attempting to forcibly get inside.  When deputies arrived they located the subject down not far from the home and rendered medical aid.  The suspect was later pronounced deceased.  The home owners were not injured.

The deceased suspect is a 39-year-old male from Middleville, MI.  It appears the suspect may have involved in two other vehicle thefts overnight and was attempting to steal a car along 108th St.  There is no connection between the suspect and home owners and it appears to be a random incident. At this time, there is nothing to suggest there are any outstanding suspects or threats to the public.

The Allegan County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, and the Gun Lake Tribal Police assisted in the initial response at the scene.
