UPDATE on 10/19/2020 at 10:10 AM: The victim, Patrick James Hooyman, passed away from injuries he sustained as a result of the accident.

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Oct. 12, 2020) - On 10/08/2020 at 7:45 P.M., a 28-year-old Grand Rapids man attempted to cross Knapp St NE east of Leffingwell Ave NE when he was hit by a van that was driving eastbound. The subject was wearing dark clothing and was hit as he tried to cross five lanes of traffic in an unlit area. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of being struck. The driver of the van, a 50-year-old Grand Rapids woman, and her passenger were not injuried. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor for the driver of the van. As a result of the crash, the road was closed for approximately three hours. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Grand Rapids Police Department and the Grand Rapids Fire Department, along with LIFE EMS.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Sgt. Mario Morey at (616) 632-6239.
