UPDATE: The victim was identified as Terence Gilbert Hartfield, a 60 year old homeless male from Grand Rapids. An autopsy this afternoon confirmed the victim drowned after falling through the ice. There is no indication of foul play.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Kent County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau.

GAINES Township: On 01/17/2020 at 11:01 hours, the Kent County Sheriff's Office responded to Eastport Drive and Ridgebrook Drive in Gaines Township on a report of a body under the ice in a retention pond. Upon arrival, it was determined that the victim was beyond help and appeared to have been there for some time. Initial indications are that the victim may have been attempting to cross the ice-covered pond and broke through the ice. The Kent County Sheriff's Office Dive Team is working to recover the body from the water. The victim has yet to be identified.
