Three Charged in Grandparent Scam Targeting Local Seniors - Update
Medicine Hat. The Medicine Hat Police Service Major Crime Unit has laid charges against three individuals following an in-depth investigation into a sophisticated “grandparent scam” that targeted local seniors.
On June 18, 2025, the victims were contacted by individuals claiming that a family member was in legal trouble and required immediate bail money. Believing the story to be true, the couple withdrew a substantial amount of cash from their bank. A courier was then arranged to attend their home and collect the funds in person. Through intensive investigative work, members of the Major Crime Unit identified and arrested three individuals believed to be responsible for the scam. A number of judicial authorizations were executed and resulted in the recovery of evidence directly linking the suspects to the offence.
Taranveer Singh, 21 years of age; Gursewak Singh, 22 years of age; and Harmonjot Kaur, 23 years of age, all of Medicine Hat, have each been charged with Fraud Over $5,000 and Theft Over $5,000. Harmonjot Kaur faces an additional charge of Money Laundering. All three individuals have been released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice on August 20, 2025.
In addition to this incident, MHPS is currently investigating a number of further complaints involving similar fraudulent activity believed to be part of a broader pattern targeting seniors in the community. These scams are designed to exploit the trust and emotions of seniors by creating urgency and panic. The MHPS encourages all residents to be wary of unsolicited calls demanding money, particularly when secrecy is emphasized or when the situation seems too urgent to verify. If in doubt, individuals are encouraged to verify details with trusted family members or contact police directly.
