The holiday season is a time to celebrate with colleagues, family, and friends. The Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) reminds everyone who will be driving to holiday events to plan ahead and ensure a safe ride home.
Throughout December, drivers in Medicine Hat can expect increased officer presence and roadside check stops to promote safe roads. Some check stops will be advertised—such as those scheduled between December 13th and December 21st—while others may occur at any time, day or night, over the coming weeks.
What to Expect at a Check Stop:
- Officers will conduct Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS). When entering a check stop, drivers must provide a breath sample. The process is quick and provides immediate results.
- Drivers who pass the screening will be able to continue on their way with minimal delay.
- The goal is to keep disruptions to a minimum while ensuring everyone’s safety.
Impaired Driving Enforcement:
- In 2025, the MHPS has charged approximately 145 drivers under the Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) program.
- Every death and injury caused by impaired driving is preventable. We all share responsibility for keeping our roads safe—whether impairment is caused by alcohol or drugs.
How You Can Help:
- If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, contact 9-1-1 immediately.
- Before heading out to your next holiday celebration, make a plan for a safe ride home. Use a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare—there are no excuses for driving impaired.
Let’s work together to keep Medicine Hat’s roads safe this holiday season.
