Criminal charges have been laid against a Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) officer following a use of force event which occurred on January 26, 2025.

While no public complaint was received, the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services was notified of the event pursuant to section 46.1 of the Alberta Police Act and a use of force review was initiated by the MHPS, which led to a criminal investigation. The Alberta Crown Prosecutors office reviewed the investigation and on October 22, 2025, Cst. Chan Lee was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon.  Cst. Lee was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on November 25, 2025.

Since the investigation began, Cst Lee has been assigned to administrative duties and will remain in that role pending the outcome of the criminal matter.  The Office of the Chief will review his duty status upon the conclusion of this process, ensuring that all decisions are made fairly and in accordance with the law.

The MHPS is committed to maintaining the highest standards of accountability and transparency. We initiated a thorough review of this incident, in the absence of a public complaint, to ensure that our actions align with community and legal standards. Ensuring the safety and maintaining the trust of our community continues to be a top priority for the Service.

As the matter is before the courts no further information will be provided at this time.
