On September 9, 2026, at approximately 6:09 p.m., the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) responded to a driving complaint near St. Patrick's School on Stratton Way SE.

Officers quickly determined the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day and had previously fled from police after officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

MHPS officers subsequently located the vehicle travelling on Stratton Way SE and attempted to bring it to a stop. The vehicle again fled, and officers did not pursue in the interest of public safety.

A short time later, police received reports that the vehicle had collided with a parked vehicle on Smithson Street SE. The occupants then abandoned the vehicle nearby and fled on foot.

Officers established containment of the area and deployed a Police Service Dog and an unmanned aerial system (drone) to assist in the search. Two suspects were located a short distance away and taken into custody without incident.

As a result of the investigation, two male youths, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, have been charged.

Youth #1 is charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Flight from a Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Several offences under the Traffic Safety Act

The youth was released from custody on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Youth Justice Court on October 29, 2026.

Youth #2 is charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Failure to Comply with a Youth Probation Order

The youth was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Youth Justice Court on September 14, 2026.
