On August 10, 2026, Medicine Hat Police Service officers were conducting roving patrols in the area of Gershaw Drive SW and the Trans-Canada Highway when they observed a 48-year-old woman operating an e-motorcycle with a wattage greater than 500 watts.

The operator allegedly proceeded through two red lights at a high rate of speed without stopping and narrowly avoided being struck by a transport truck. Officers stopped the operator, who was found to be a suspended driver. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, operating a motor vehicle without registration, and failing to stop at a red light.

Police are reminding owners and operators that e-motorcycles and e-bikes with a wattage greater than 500 watts may be classified as motor vehicles. These vehicles require the operator to wear an approved helmet and have valid insurance, registration, and the appropriate class of driver’s licence.
