As the new school year begins on Tuesday, August 11, the Naples Police Department is reminding all drivers that school safety starts with every one of us.

The flashing red lights on a school bus mean one thing: STOP. A school bus stop arm is not a suggestion - it's a child's safety zone. Every time you stop for a school bus, you're protecting children who may be crossing the street or stepping into traffic where they are hardest to see.

Our officers will be actively monitoring and strictly enforcing school zone and school bus safety laws throughout the school year. These buses carry our most precious cargo - our children.

Please remember to:

• Stop for school buses as required by law.
• Slow down and obey posted school zone speed limits.
• Stay extra vigilant near schools, bus stops, school buses, and in school parking lots.
• Put your phone down. Florida law requires drivers to be hands-free in active school zones.
• Allow yourself extra travel time during the morning and afternoon commute so you can drive patiently and safely.
