Notice to drivers to keep students safe!!
At the beginning of every school year, we remind drivers about the dangers of passing a school bus with their red lights and stop signs activated. However, as warmer months are upon us, more drivers on the roads and other factors have contributed to an increase in drive-by incidents with our local school busses.
In all 50 states, it is illegal to pass a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended that is stopped to load or unload students. The number one priority should be student safety, many motorists get in a hurry and ignore the law.
In Wyoming, this is a violation of Statute 31-5-507 Meeting or passing stopped school bus; markings, and visual signals. (a) The driver of a vehicle upon meeting or overtaking from either direction any stopped school bus shall stop before reaching the school bus when there is in operation on the school bus the flashing red lights as specified in W.S. 31-5-929 and the driver shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights are no longer actuated.
We have cited drivers recently for this dangerous safety violation, the fine associated is $450! Did you know regardless of the number of lanes or medians, all traffic must stop in both directions? We will continue to work closely with both Sublette County School districts to keep students Safe. Bus drivers report every drive-by and buses have the equipment to capture the license plate of the drivers in violation. Protect the students, save money, and don’t pass a school bus while loading and unloading students.
