(Pinedale, Wyo – January 16th, 2025) Sublette County Sheriff’s Office announces passing of retired K9 Wojtek.

With profound sadness, the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of retired K9 Wojtek, a loyal and courageous partner who faithfully served our community for nine years.

K9 Wojtek, a Belgian Malinois born in Poland in January 2012, began his training as an Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) at IronHeart High-Performance Working Dogs in Kansas. In February 2013, Wojtek was paired with Detective Sergeant Travis Lanning, beginning a remarkable partnership that left a lasting legacy in Sublette County and across the State of Wyoming.

Throughout his distinguished career, K9 Wojtek played a vital role in ensuring the safety of countless individuals. He conducted protective security sweeps for dignitaries, including Wyoming governors, members of the U.S. Congress, U.S. Cabinet officials, former U.S. presidents, and other high-profile figures. His exceptional skills were instrumental during events such as the 2016 Western States Governors’ Association annual meeting, the Conference of Chief Justices and State Court Administrators, and the Federal Reserve Summit.

Recently, K9 Wojtek was diagnosed with cancer. This morning, members of the Sheriff’s Office gathered at the Pinedale Animal Hospital to honor his extraordinary service and bid a heartfelt farewell. K9 Wojtek's presence will be deeply missed, but his impact on our community will never be forgotten.

Even in retirement, Wojtek remained with his lifelong handler, Detective Sergeant Lanning, enjoying a well-deserved life of rest and companionship.

We extend our deepest gratitude to K9 Wojtek for his years of devoted service and offer our condolences to Detective Sergeant Lanning and his family during this difficult time. K9 Wojtek's legacy will continue to inspire and remind us of the enduring bond between a K9 and their handler.

K9 Wojtek EOW 1-16-2025.
