Westchester County Police are investigating a fatal collision involving a wrong-way driver that occurred early this morning on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle.

At 4:12 a.m., a Patrol officer traveling southbound observed two vehicles that had just been involved in a head-on collision just south of Webster Avenue. Patrol officers found the driver of the wrong-way vehicle unresponsive behind the wheel, removed him from his car and began CPR.

New Rochelle Fire Department and Empress EMS personnel also responded and took over care. The driver, a man in his 30s, was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 5:07 a.m.

Preliminary investigation has determined that the wrong-way vehicle, a Toyota Prius, had entered the parkway at Webster Avenue. County Police had not received any calls reporting a wrong-way driver or an accident so it believed the collision had just occurred when the officer came upon it.

The other vehicle involved was a Cadillac Escalade. The driver and his two passengers reported minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The full circumstances of the collision remain under investigation by Patrol officers and detectives from the General Investigations Unit.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification to family members.
