Scam Alert!

September 22nd, 2023 5:03 pm

WCPD detectives are investigating a scam in which a caller is pretending to be a representative of the “Westchester County Sheriff’s Office.” The police impersonator claims there is a warrant for the arrest of the person being contacted for failure to appear for grand jury duty.

This is a scam. Please hang up if you get such a call or do not return the call if you find a voice mail to this effect. A fraudulent phone number is being provided that leads to a series of menu options for the “sheriff’s office” in an effort to make the scam appear legit.

For starters, there is no Westchester County Sheriff’s Office. This department was created in 1979 through a merger of the Westchester County Sheriff’s Department and the Westchester County Parkway Police Department. A variety of traditional “sheriff’s” functions are handled by our Civil Unit in White Plains, however there is no such entity as the “Westchester County Sheriff’s Office”.

Again, this type of call is a scam. Ignore anyone claiming to be from the “Westchester County Sheriff’s Office.” If you have been contacted by this scammer, you can report that to us at 914-864-7700
