SCAM ALERT: AFTER THE STORM

October 14th, 2024 10:06 am

Attorney General Ashley Moody is warning Floridians to be vigilant for price gouging, disaster scams and fraud in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.

Anyone who suspects price gouging or fraud can report it to the Florida Attorney General’s Office by visiting MyFloridaLegal.com or calling 1-866-966-7226.

Qualified contractors are in high demand following a disaster. If in need of a repair, follow these tips to find a reputable contractor:

?? Be wary of anyone who approaches unsolicited offering to work at a discount with supplies left from a previous job;

???? Be wary of an out-of-state “contractor”; no pick-up truck; no professional indicators such as shirt, business card, vehicle signage; no references; an unsolicited approach.

? Have damage evaluated by the insurer before arranging repairs to ensure work will be covered;

? Verify the contractor’s license at MyFloridaLicense.com;

? Check for proof of insurance and verify with the insurer that the policy is current;

???? Avoid paying in cash, if possible, for the deposit (use Venmo, credit card, Zelle, or check) to leave a record. Do not make final payment until all the work is completed to your satisfaction.
